How To Create Ghost Mannequin Effect

In this blog post you will learn how to create the ghost mannequin effect. To make a pro ghost mannequin effect, we use Adobe Photoshop. This post is made for beginners. So do not worry if you do not know Photoshop. If you already know it, great. You are one step ahead. In this blog, we will also learn about clipping paths, frequency separation, color fixes, and more. Stick with this guide. You will find a video at the end to walk you through each step. Let us start.

Step 1: Prepare and Import Your Image into Photoshop

Before you start the ghost mannequin effect, you need a clean image to work with. Open Adobe Photoshop and bring in your product photo. Click "Open" on the home screen. Or go to File > Open. You can also use Ctrl+O on Windows or Command+O on Mac.

Step 2: Liquify The Garments If Needed

Once your file is loaded, look at the shape and details of the garment. If any parts look bent or not shaped right, fix them with the Liquify tool. Pick the image layer. Go to Filter > Liquify. Gently move the fabric or body shape so the product looks natural and even. This step makes sure you start clean. It will make your final ghost mannequin effect look much more pro.

Step 3: Create Outline Of The Garments

To set the right garment shape, pick the Pen Tool in Photoshop. Make sure Path is picked on the top bar. Take a new layer. Now draw a smooth line around the shirt. Do not go edge to edge. Follow the ideal shape you want the garment to have. Think of this as a guide to fix the shirt later. Keep your curves clean and natural.

Once your path is ready, right-click and pick Make Selection. Then right-click again and pick Stroke.

Use a 1px to 2px stroke so you have a clear line to work with.

Do the same for the collar area. These guide lines help you reshape and match the garment to a clean, pro ghost mannequin look.

Step 4: Shape the Garment Using the Liquify Tool

Now it is time to match the clothes to your guide line. Pick the garment layer and open Liquify again. In the liquify panel, turn on Show Backdrop. Pick the layer where you made the guide. Set the backdrop opacity to 100 so you can see the line clearly.

Pick the Soft Round Brush in the liquify tool. Gently push the fabric toward the guide line. Work slow and make small changes. Do not push too far or the shirt may look fake. The goal is to follow your guide smoothly. Give the garment a clean, natural shape that fits the ghost mannequin style.

Take your time here. A polished shape will make a big difference in the final result.

Step 5: Remove the Extra Background Outside the Guide

Once your garment shape is good, it is time to clean up the background. First, pick the path you made before and turn it into a selection. Next, go to the Select menu and click Inverse. This flips your selection and picks the background around the garment.

Now press the Delete key. This removes the background of the garment.

Check that the edges look smooth and natural. This step helps cut out the clothes and gets them ready for the ghost mannequin effect.

Step 6: Add and Align the Neck Joint

Now it is time to work on the neck area. Bring in your neck image and line it up with the guide you made. Turn off the main garment layer for a moment so you can see the guide clearly. Match the neck shape. If needed, use the Liquify tool again to make small changes and line it up with the outline.

Once the neck matches the guide, place the neck joint layer behind the main garment layer. This helps make a natural inside-collar look. After placing, carefully pick and remove any extra parts you do not need.

Take your time here. A clean and well-lined neck joint plays a big role in making the ghost mannequin effect look pro and real.

Step 7: Create a Natural Shadow for the Neck Area

To make the neck area look real, you need to add a soft shadow behind the main garment. For that, make a new layer above the neck layer and behind the garment layer. Pick it. Now, hold Ctrl and click on the thumbnail of the main garment layer. This makes a selection around the garment.

Then, go to Select > Modify > Feather. Use a feather value between 30 and 40 pixels. You can change this based on your image and how soft you want the shadow.

Now fill the selection with color. Pick Black as your foreground color. Then press Shift + Backspace (or Shift + Delete on Mac) to open the Fill dialog box. Pick Foreground Color and click OK.

To remove extra parts, pick the layer where you made the shadow. Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac) and click on the thumbnail of the neck layer. This makes a selection around the neck area.

Now press Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows or Command + Shift + I on Mac to flip the selection. This picks everything outside the neck. Now press Delete to erase the extra shadow. Keep only the shadow inside the neckline.

Now change the opacity so it blends with the garment. Pick the shadow layer and slowly lower the opacity until it looks soft and real.

Step 8: Remove Wrinkles and Creases

To remove wrinkles and creases, we use Frequency Separation. This lets you fix texture and color on their own.
