Hi everyone, this is Zahangir Alam, founder of FixAnyPhoto.
Today I’ll show you how you can easily and professionally remove wrinkles from clothes in Adobe Photoshop . In this guide, I will demonstrate the advanced technique that professional photo editors use to smooth fabric while keeping the natural texture.
So, let’s get started.
Step 1: Remove the Background

First, we need to remove the background.
For precise selection, you can use the Pen Tool . It takes a little more time than other tools, but it provides the most accurate results. Alternatively, you can use Photoshop’s AI Remove Background feature, which is faster and works very well in many cases.
To use the Pen Tool , go to the toolbar and select the Pen Tool. Carefully trace around the clothes or garment to create a path. Once the path is complete, convert it into a selection and click the Mask icon in the Layers panel to remove the background.
If you prefer the AI method, simply click Remove Background from the Contextual Task Bar , and Photoshop will automatically isolate the subject.
Step 2: Frequency Separation

After removing the background, create two copies of your subject layer. One will be used for high frequency and the another for low frequency . Rename the layers accordingly to keep things organized.
Select the Low Frequency layer and turn off the visibility of the High Frequency layer. With the Low Frequency layer selected, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur . Increase the blur amount until the fabric texture fades but the overall shape remains visible . Be careful not to blur too much.
Next, turn the High Frequency layer back on and select it. Go to Image > Apply Image .
In the Apply Image window:
Choose the Low Frequency layer as the source
Set the Blending Mode to Subtract
Set Opacity to 100%
Set Scale to 2
Set Offset to 128
Click OK .
Finally, change the blending mode of the High Frequency layer from Normal to Linear Light .
Now your frequency separation setup is complete.
Step 3: Remove Wrinkles and Unwanted Folds

Before starting, make sure Transparent Pixels are locked on both the High Frequency and Low Frequency layers.
Next, select the Mixer Brush Tool from the toolbar and match the recommended settings.
Gently paint over the areas where wrinkles appear. This will smooth the fabric while preserving its natural texture.
Be careful not to paint over natural folds too much , as we will refine those in the next step.
After reducing the wrinkles, we will combine the layers for final refinements.
Select both the High Frequency and Low Frequency layers and press Ctrl + Alt + E . This will create a new merged layer containing all visible layers.
Turn on Lock Transparent Pixels for this merged layer.
Now select the Clone Stamp Tool . Hold the Alt key and sample a clean area of the fabric. Then gently paint over unwanted folds or imperfections.
Take your time and work carefully to maintain the natural look and texture of the fabric .
And that’s it!
Using this professional workflow, you can remove wrinkles from clothes while preserving realistic fabric details.
Conclusion
Removing wrinkles from clothes in Adobe Photoshop is not just about smoothing the fabric—it’s about doing it while preserving natural texture and realism .
By using frequency separation , you separate texture and color, allowing you to work more precisely without damaging the details. Tools like the Mixer Brush Tool and Clone Stamp Tool help you refine the final result and achieve a clean, professional look.
Remember:
Always work subtly and gradually
Avoid over-smoothing the fabric
Keep natural folds where necessary for realism
With practice, this technique will significantly improve your editing quality and help you achieve professional-level results .
